Flat Baroque explores the dichotomy between ornament and a value readily accessible material, PVC pipe. The form borrows the elaborate profiles of the ornamental motifs of Baroque design but reconstructs them with everyday plumbing pipe fittings.
The title Flat Baroque is an acknowledgment of the economics behind the work. The desire to create something visually interesting, ornate, without access to expensive or refined materials. Recomposed and re-contextualized to create something beautiful.
The work grew from an interest in DIY culture and the idea that design does not have to depend on specialized materials, expensive equipment, or high-tech methods of fabrication. Design should be accessible. There is something democratic about PVC: it can be purchased at almost any hardware store, cut with simple tools, assembled by almost anyone, and transformed into something entirely removed from its intended purpose.
